iPodCopy - An iPod Transfer Utility
IPodCopy is one of the many programs available to help users copy or backup the contents of their iPods to a new computer.

This is especially useful because Apple ties every iPod to a single iTunes library. They do this as protection against unauthorized file sharing, but it also interferes with moving your iPod library to a new PC or making a backup in case your hard drive crashes.

Unfortunately, iPodCopy does not offer as smooth a copying process as some of its competitors.

IPodCopy works much like its competitors: you install the software, configure iTunes, and connect your iPod. IPodCopy then scans the iPod, displays them it in a browser, and lets you copy individuals items or all of the iPod’s contents to either iTunes or a computer, as a backup (read a how-to).

This, though, is one of iPodCopy’s shortcomings: There’s no one-touch button to transfer all the contents of the iPod, meaning that you need to transfer songs, movies, playlists, etc. individually. While this isn’t a major drawback, it does cause the transfer process to take more clicks to complete.

In a nice touch, though, iPodCopy includes specific utilities to transfer pictures, games, notes, calendar items, and address book entries from the iPod to the new machine (some of these features are available in the Windows version only).

The transfer process was not as quick using iPodCopy as other programs. My 6433 songs took about 3 hours to transfer; they took about 95 minutes to transfer using CopyPod.

Additionally, iPodCopy reported some phantom errors. At the end of the transfer process, the program told me that it had failed to transfer 1965 songs. However, when I checked iTunes, the songs were there and played fine.

Other transfers were much faster, though: moving a 1 GB movie only took about 2 minutes.

IPodCopy did maintain metadata such as playcounts and last played dates. Like CopyPod, it lost some album art in the transfer, but that’s easy to get back using iTunes.

IPodCopy does all the things it sets out to do and generally does them well, but it doesn’t do them as quickly or efficiently as its competitors. In order to become one of the best programs in its space, Wide Angle Software needs to address the issues of speed and incorrect errors.

Since iPods are basically big hard drives with special software and a screen, the hard drive in your iPod needs to be formatted. Formatting is essentially the process of prepping the drive to talk to the computer it connects to.

Luckily, you usually don’t have to worry about formatting your iPod. Formatting happens automatically when you first set up your iPod. If you use your iPod with a Mac, it is Mac formatted. If you use it with Windows, it gets Windows formatting.

But what if you used to have a PC and just bought a Mac, or vice versa, and want to use your iPod with it? Then you have to reformat your iPod.

Also, if you have two computers – one Windows and one Mac – and want to use your iPod with both, you may need to reformat your iPod.

NOTE:

Before you even think about reformatting an iPod, make double sure that you’ve got your iTunes library backed up, because formatting the iPod means erasing everything on it and reloading it with songs, movies, etc.

Mac and PC Compatibility

If you have a Mac-formatted iPod and want to use it with a Windows computer, you will need to reformat it. If you have a Windows formatted iPod and want to use it with a Mac, you won’t. That’s because Macs can use both Mac and Windows-formatted iPods, whereas Windows can only use Windows-format iPods.

How to Reformat iPod

In order to reformat iPod to work on both Mac and PC, connect your iPod to a Windows computer. Then follow the steps in the how to restore your iPod article. This will reset your iPod and format it for Windows.

Now, resync your iPod with the computer that contains your iTunes library. ITunes will ask you if you want to erase and sync the iPod. If you say yes, this will redownload your iTunes library to the iPod.

Checking iPod Format

Each time you sync your iPod, you can check what format it is. In the iPod management screen in iTunes, there’s some data at the top of the window next to the image of your iPod. One of those items is “Format,” which tells you how your iPod is formatted.

1. Introduction to Making iPhone Ringtones with iFuntastic

At launch, the iPhone’s ringtones were limited only to the ones that came preloaded on it, despite the expectation of many observers that a music phone ought to be able to use the music stored on it as a ringtone.

Luckily, a program called iFuntastic has been released that will let you add your own custom ringtones, including those made from your iTunes music collection, to the iPhone.

This step-by-step guide will show you how to add custom iPhone ringtones.

REQUIRED
In order to add custom iPhone ringtones, you’ll need a Mac running an Intel processor, a copy of iFuntastic (free download iFuntastic), and an audio editing program (Garageband is a great tool for this that comes free with Intel Macs).

DISCLAIMER
Making these kinds of changes to your iPhone can damage it. If you make these changes, you’re taking a risk and taking the health of your iPhone into your own hands. About.com and iFuntastic aren’t responsible for the results. Before you start this project, sync your iPhone to back it up. Modifiying the iPhone may also cause problems with future iPhone software updates.

2. Create Ringtones in Garageband

Once you’ve downloaded iFuntastic, use Garageband to convert MP3s into snippets that can work as ringtones. Garageband is an easy-to-use tool and makes editing am mp3 into a ringtone a process that will just take a minute or two. Once you’ve got your ringtone saved as an .m4a file, you’re ready to go.

3. Launch iFuntastic, Prep iPhone

Launch iFuntastic. In order to add custom ringtones, you’ll need to prep the iPhone for these changes. Do that by clicking the “Prepare” button on the right and then the “Jailbreak” button at the bottom of the next screen.

Launch iFuntastic, Prep iPhone for Ringtones

4. Restart iPhone According to Instructions

In order to “jailbreak” the iPhone, you have to follow the onscreen steps, which include quitting iTunes and doing a specialized restart to the iPhone. Just follow iFuntastic’s instructions and you should be fine.

5. Enter Ringtones Screen

Once iFuntastic tells you that your iPhone has successfully been readied for additions, click the “Ringtones” button on the right. This will show you a screen listing all the ringtones on your iPhone and all the ones available to you on your computer.

Enter iFuntastic’s Ringtones Screen

6. Add Ringtones to List

To add the ringtones you just created in Garageband, click the “add to list” button and then navigate your computer to find the new ringtones. They will now show up in the list on the left.

7. Select Ringtones for Addition or Deletion

To add the custom ringtones to iPhone, click the plus icon at the left of the ringtones. The icon will turn green when you have selected it.

To remove ringtones from the iPhone, click the icon next to the ringtone you want to remove. It will turn red.

Adding or Removing iPhone Ringtones with iFuntastic

8. Update and Restart iPhone

To complete the addition of the new ringtones and delete old ones, click the “Update iPhone” button at the bottom.

When this is done, click the “Finish” icon at the right. In that screen, click “Jail” button to return your iPhone to its normal state. Restart your iPhone.

Update iPhone wth iFuntastic and Restart

9. Start Using Your Custom iPhone Ringtones!

Now, when you disconnect the iPhone from your computer, you’ll have the new ringtones on it. You can now make those ringtones your default sounds or assign them to individual contacts.

The iTunes software that uploads music and photos is included when you buy any iPod. The software is called iTunes, and has often been likened to a jukebox. It will play, store and organise all the digital music and video files on your iPod. Another feature of iTunes is it can connect to the iTunes Music Store, where you can purchase music files to play on your iPod. Even though iTunes has been developed by Apple it’s not only compatible with the Mac OS X operating system. iTunes will work with Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 operating systems. Since version 3 iTunes will no longer work with Mac OS 9, or Windows 98 or ME. iTunes is also freely downloadable on the web. When you get your iPod, you’ll want to start transferring songs to your iPod. This starts with your computer and iTunes. You will need to install iTunes on your computer, you can do this be using the CD that came with your iPod, or the url link below. Then, you can buy songs from the iTunes music store, or import CDs to your iTunes music library. Then all you need to do is connect your iPod to your computer. The iTunes software will then automatically transfer the music to your iPod. iTunes is setup to automatically update your iPod with the new songs you have downloaded. After you’ve transferred the music from iTunes to your iPod, you can then use the Click Wheel to browse through your music by playlist, song, artist, album, or genre. With iTunes you can also create playlists, where you group songs from different albums and artists into a mix tape. It’s fairly easy to create playlists with common themes or moods, and you can use these for any occasion, like at a party. It’s become common for celebs like Leonardo DiCaprio to DJ at LA clubs from the playlists on their iPod.

Download iTunes - http://www.apple.com/itunes/

The Apple Coporation first released the iPod on October 23, 2001. The idea was first brought to the attention of Apple by Tony Fadell. Before this Tony Fadell had shopped the idea to Phillips and RealNetworks . Luckily for Apple they hired him as an independent contractor, and the iPod project began. To begin with the one serious flaw with the iPod, was the price. The machine cost $400 in the US, and many consumers simply couldnt afford this price. Also the lack of PC support wasn’t a strong point to begin with. Steve Jobs soon noticed this error and PC support was promisted soon after the launch. The iPod was launched only one month later in Europe. This contributed to Apple selling a massive 125,000 new iPods in 2001. Over the years many software updates have been released to fix several bug fixes from the generation 1 iPod’s. One area Apple ran into problems with was Apple Corps, the holders of the Beatles copyrights. They sued Apple for infringement on previous agreements for the iTunes Music Store. Basically Apple Computers were only allowed to use the Apple name in products unrelated to music, the lawsuit was eventually settled out of court. By June of 2003, Apple had shipped one million iPod’s worldwide. The iPod has since become the biggest selling portable hard disk player, and has sold around twenty million units from 2001-2005. A big contribution to this has been the maketing of the iPod, with some of the best ads seen in years. All the ads featuring the coolest tunes playing in the background.

The silhouette ads were hugely popular.
